The maintenance of wheels, or, to be precise, rims and tires for your Ford Mustang, is a mandatory routine for car owners. Doing it yourself is more economical, but beginners may struggle to complete some operations.

As one of the final steps of tire assembly, screwing the hub studs is not difficult but requires properly handling your lug design. Following previous posts, we dedicate today’s tutorial to the Mustang bolt pattern.

Ford Mustang Bolt Pattern

Most Mustangs these days come with a 5×4.5in or 5×114.3mm bolt pattern (5 bolts in a 4.5in circle). But the lug pattern on older versions before 1994 will vary depending on the car generation.

5x4.5 lug bolt pattern

First Generation (1956 – 1973)

Ford Mustang First Generation

Unexpectedly, the first Mustangs hit the market with two choices of bolt patterns. The first is a 4-lug design with an imaginary circle measuring 114.3 mm (or 4×4.5″) in diameter. The other has featured the same bolt dimension, but the number of wheel lugs has increased to 5 (denoted 5×114.3 mm or 5×4.5″).

Mustang II & Fox Body (1974 – 1993)

Ford Mustang 1974 - 1993

Since 1974, Ford has fitted their Mustangs with the lug design of 4×108 mm or 4×4.25″. This bolt circle measurement has maintained its popularity for nearly 20 years.

However, the manufacturer made an exception from 1983 – 1986. Besides the standard pattern, the 2.3T I4 engine stood out compared to other models due to its unique bolt construction. It has served 5 lug holes forming a bolt circle with a diameter of 114.3 mm – similar to a few predecessors.

SN95, S197, And S550 (1994 – Now)

The bolt pattern on Mustangs has remained unchanged since 1994. So far, all models have followed the 5×114.3 mm or 5×4.5″ lug pattern, simplifying maintenance for modern drivers.

Correct Specifications For Wheel Fitment

Even if the lug design repeats at some stages, each generation serves unique wheel specifications such as offset, backspacing, rim size range, etc. Determine your engine and refer to our list below.

1956 – 1973

Despite multi variations in bolt pattern, Mustang wheels from this period shared other specs, including:

  • Center bore: 61.5 mm
  • Wheel fasteners: Lug nuts
  • Thread size: 1/2″ – 20 UNF
  • Bolt Pattern: 114.3 mm (or 4×4.5″) and 5×114.3 mm or 5×4.5″
  • Tire & rim size: Official equipment information is not available. However, some experts claimed that these cars have tire sizes of 185/75R14 or 205/70R14 and rim sizes of 6Jx14 ET12 based on the provided specs.

FAQs

Is 5×4.5 The Same As 5×114.3?

Yes. They are just the conversion from inch to millimeter.

What Cars Have The 5×108 Bolt Pattern?

The 5×108 mm fits into several vehicles, such as Ford Focus, Citroen C5 III, Volvo S80, Fiat Scudo, etc.

Conclusion

The bolt pattern for Mustangs does not follow a certain design, but fortunately, the manufacturer has unified all into one style for the most recent models. However, it is not enough to only consider this information when investing in a new rim or tire. Thoroughly research the wheel measurements of your car generation for the ideal sizes range.
